3 questions for Jérôme Grosset-Janin

What does your sport involve?
I’m a driver. I drive a Citroën C4 WRC with a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged engine with a horsepower of just over 500. The car has four-wheel drive with a 6-gear sequential gearbox. The whole thing weighs 1,300kg, including me and my equipment. The races take place over two days, on a Saturday and Sunday, with circuits of between 900 and 1,300 metres. It’s a sprint format. You start on the line, with five cars, for the three qualifiers that decide the starting order for the final. Then the final is in 6 rounds after starting in a grid.

What are your main character traits?
I’m passionate, shy, I seem calm on the outside but inside I’m going mad! When I’m racing, I’m pretty focused, always ready. I have to balance out my determination, my desire to perform and my sensitivity. Outside the car, we work with my team to make the most of my feelings and work on the car and/or myself to make sure we win. This demands a lot of work. I know how to play with the pressure on other drivers, even though I’m not too sensitive to it. Of course I’m aware of the pressure, but I know how to turn it into an advantage… In terms of my faults, I’m too impatient… and a bit disorganised too. Any my biggest fault is that I like sleeping too much!

What’s your best sporting memory? And what was the most unexpected?
what was the most unexpected? There can only be one. My victory at the Mont Blanc Rally, for me, it’s a memory that I’m never going to forget. Even today, when I drive these routes, I can remember the really intense moments of that victory. The pressure, the smells in the car, the noise, my co-driver, my family… It all comes flooding back.
The most unexpected was when I got the chance to do this sport that I’ve loved for such a long time, but that seemed so distant, so impossible. It’s a difficult environment, and a complicated one. The deciding factor was when another driver, Eric Arpin, accompanied me, and getting the support from my family. I was transformed from a kid, dreaming of becoming a driver, into a driver. From that moment, I’ve worked hard to do everything I can to make the most of all the opportunities that I’m presented with.
